So Rox, What's with jeans these days? After having baby #2, I got rid of all of mine in a fit of dispair. They only fit for about 5 minutes between babies, and were consequently circa 1990. Now, on the eve of a Christmas visit to Wisconsin, I can't find any that are flattering. They all seem designed for either 15 year old girls, or 55 year old boomers (no offense to people in these groups). I want to look hip, but not ridiculous. I'm 5'1", 120 lbs with hips and a butt. Any ideas?

Dear Nik:

I'm sad to say that I, too am having a not very good relationship with any denim these days. Before I found out that I was pregnant with number 2, I started going into my closet every morning, considering my jeans, and tossing them into a corner in disgust! I would even venture to say that jeans are for an even more limited audience than you -- they are for people with slim, low-slung hips -- commonly called guys, or girl ectomorphs (leggy, muscular types).

My girlfriend A. looks so hot in jeans, I want her! She's got a very straight, no-curves body, and it looks great in jeans. My curves just look like a sausage in the wrong size casing!

You know what it is about jeans? The waistband. It hurts me. I don't want to be in a relationship with anyone (even Levi Strauss) that hurts me.

The solution is two-fold. First is to find a jean substitute -- a pair of comfy, somewhat stylish pants that are easy to put on and go with everything. My thought (for me) is boot cut pants.

The other thing is to go with custom fitting. Dear Levi Strauss has a program (I don't know where, God knows not in any store I'm ever in) where you get measured and they make jeans for you. The other way to do this is to resign yourself to an entire day of jeans shopping. If something fits great and looks good, snag it. Don't assume that because the size 8 Calvins fit you, the next pair will. Try on each and every pair you buy. Now, if you can't find a perfect fit, don't despair. Buy the almost perfect pair (almost perfect is not defined as pants that will fit when you lose weight, by the way) and take them to a tailor to take in the baggy seat or correct the line of the legs or taper the waistband.

Regards,

Roxanne
