Hello Roxanne,

I am a mother-to-be and have been reading a ton about AP and my husband and I are anxious to practice. I am wondering if it's too early to enroll in breastfeeding classes/LLL meetings at 7 months preggo.

Thanks!

Janet

Dear Janet:

What a thoughtful mom-to-be! Seven months preggo isn't too early for anything baby-related. For one thing, time flies quicker than you think. Add that to the baby-comes-when-baby's-good-n-ready and you may only be weeks away from needing the info you'll get in class.

There are two parts to your question. The first has to do with breastfeeding classes. You should definitely start looking around for those now, because you may find that the next available class starts next month or there are no openings that are convenient for you and dh – until your due date. Yes, hubby should go as well, to get the scoop and be able to be supportive in times of need. A class is typically a half-day affair and there's lots of demonstrating with baby dolls.

As for La Leche League, their meetings are loosely based on a series of four or five topics (I'm a little rusty, today) so you can go whenever you want. If you hit only one meeting before baby comes, great. If you can squeeze in a couple, even better. The very best part of going before you have a bambino screaming to latch on is that you will get to see *lots* of babies latching on to *lots* of breasts. (LLLI meetings aren't usually where we moms practice our most discreet public nursing techniques.) Also, when you finally have a baby and go to a meeting, you'll see familiar faces.

Best,

Roxanne
